Estimating corrosion in metallic stacks caused by hydrochloric acid

A simple method can be used to estimate possibility of corrosion in metallic stacks and surfaces due to hydrochloric acid (HCl) deposition from stack gases. The method is based on the HCl content in gases and the flue gas temperature. Scope of the problem. In a previous article, the author examined the possibility of corrosion caused by sulfuric acid deposition from stack gases emitted by traditional combustion equipment such as boilers generating steam and hot water.1 In certain combustion equipment such as hazardous waste incinerators, other acids such as HCl can also form, leading to metallic stack corrosion, when deposited on cold metallic surfaces.
