European demand for fuels made from renewable resources could triple by 2010. The percentage of biofuels in the region's total fuel mix will rise from the current 2% to 5.75% by decade's end, according to research by Lurgi AG. This means that all fuels from renewable sources will rise from 5 million tons (MMton) to 14 MMton by 2010. Taking a nominal conversion rate of 7.5 bbl/ton, this equates to a production increase from 37.5 million bbl/yr (MMbpy) to 105 MMbpy. Lurgi AG estimates total necessary plant investments will be about $3.6 billion and could mean 40 new biodiesel plants and 60 new bioethanol plants by 2010.
