Update on US biodiesel production

What a difference a year makes; progress regarding fuel specifications facilitates growing acceptance of renewables

Prebo, B., Thurlo Pearson, A., National Biodiesel Board

This time last year, there were 88 biodiesel plants; now, there are more than 165. That is just one example of how much changed in the US biodiesel industry during 2007. The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) would like to provide some updates on the industry's growth as well as some priorities and goals for the biodiesel sector. In keeping with talking about biodiesel by the numbers, the 2007 fuel-sales volume grew from 250 million gallons in 2006 to 450 million gallons. The number of distributors carrying biodiesel is now at more than 1,900 throughout the US, with more than 1,200 retail pumps offering a blend of biodiesel (Fig. 1).
