Crude oil distillation is a large energy consumer and a large waste generator. However, through improved process thermodynamics, significant reductions in energy consumption and waste generation can be achieved. At current energy prices, energy savings alone justify investment needed for process commercialization. There is even a greater justification if economic cost of waste generation is accepted. New advanced integration and distributed distillation methods can offer many opportunities to existing refineries. Background.
