Global: Meeting Africa’s demand for oil products

Demand for refined oil products is expected to continue growing in Africa, both in the short and medium terms. However, the continent’s refining capacity is unlikely to keep pace as commercial risks threaten to hold back planned new refineries and the expansion of existing facilities.

Demand for refined oil products is expected to continue growing in Africa, both in the short and medium terms. However, the continent’s refining capacity is unlikely to keep pace as commercial risks threaten to hold back planned new refineries and the expansion of existing facilities. Oil product demand in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated to grow from 1.8 MMbpd to 4 MMbpd by 2040, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The agency predicts that between 2012 and 2040, sub-Saharan Africa’s demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is expected to grow 7.3%/yr, fueled by increased use in both the aviation and building (residential and services) sectors.
