Early in our training as engineers, we developed the ability to collect and evaluate data. Next, we learned to reach accurate conclusions and to progress beyond stating the problem. We were encouraged to offer firm recommendations leading to both short- and long-term solutions. Our work product could not contradict science when we submitted our findings and recommendations to management. We were cautioned not to place credence in fanciful tales, and tasked with giving managers the researched facts they needed to make informed decisions.
