I've just come to the end of a major analysis1 of Year 2000 (Y2K) problems affecting the oil and gas industries in the Ex-communist Countries of Eastern and Central Europe (ECECE). Actually, we intend to update the analysis as new information becomes available over the next few months and to add a supplementary "after action report" in March of 2000 – if we survive. Not surprisingly, a survey of 26 different countries, from Albania to Uzbekistan (there was not much point in covering Yugoslavia), reveals a wide diversity of approaches to the problem, ranging from the near Stalinist (Croatia, Hungary), through bumbling (Russia), to the impressive (Czech Republic, Estonia).
