Elliott Group wins dual compressor contracts for Ruwais refinery

Elliott Group has been selected to supply the compressor packages for the residue fluid catalytic cracker and the crude oil distillation plant as part of the expansion at Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Co.’s (Takreer) Ruwais refinery. The project will nearly double Takreer's refining capacity in order to meet growing local demand for high-quality transportation fuels and to boost exports of intermediate and finished petroleum products.

The residue fluid catalytic cracking unit is the centerpiece of the project. Under contract with the engineering procurement contractor, GS Engineering & Construction, Elliott will provide seven compressor trains, a power recovery expander train and associated auxiliaries.  Equipment includes a wet gas compressor, two heat pump compressors, two refrigeration compressors, a propylene compressor and a hot gas expander.

"The complex processing requirements presented a number of technical challenges and design options," said David Baker, Elliott Group's regional director for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "We worked closely with GS Engineering to develop the technical solutions that will enable Takreer to meet its stringent environmental objectives while maximizing efficiency and output."

Elliott Group will provide the compressors for the crude oil distillation plant under contract with SK Engineering & Construction, the engineering procurement contractor for this element of the refinery expansion project.

"Elliott will supply four compressor trains for the distillation unit including one natural gas compressor and three recycle compressors," said Mr. Baker. "We were able to offer good technical solutions at a reasonable cost, and we have a large installed base in the region. Coupled with a strong track record of customer support, these factors were instrumental in Elliott's winning the job. We are delighted to be working with SK Engineering on this project."

The Ruwais compressor trains will be manufactured at Elliott Group's plant in Sodegaura, Japan. The power recovery expander will be built at the company's facility in Jeannette, Pennsylvania. Delivery is scheduled for mid-2013 with commissioning to follow in the first quarter of 2014.
