As part of an advanced process control (APC) scheme, online
analyzers may help you operate against your specification and so
maximize profit. But what do you do when your analyzer misbehaves?
Must you then operate conservatively and lose out on yield?
As part of an APC project on a vacuum distillation unit (VDU), we
addressed this problem. The unit has an analyzer for the waxy oil
product viscosity. This viscosity must be kept below a certain
limit. We have increased reliability of the viscosity value by
providing a prediction as a back-up for the times the analyzer is
not giving a valid reading.
The net result is increased online time for the APC scheme and
