Use micrographs to diagnose FCC operations
New analytical methods explore processing problems at the catalyst particle level
Catalyst plays a pivotal role in the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) operation and affect product yields and quality. Several testing methods are used to determine quantitative results such as physical and chemical composition of FCC catalysts. But the data are averages and do not represent the real state of the catalyst particles. Emerging observation methods, such as micrographs, can detect operational problems including high catalyst loss, calcium (Ca) contamination, poor coke burning, etc., for FCC catalyst. Such testing methods can be applied to identify FCC unit problems and resolve these difficulties at the particle level.
For many years, catalysts have been central comp
