Combining advanced process control (APC) and dynamic real-time optimization can pay off. Recently, Borealis Polymers executed an online optimization project at its phenol and aromatics plants in Porvoo, Finland. The plantwide application was able to increase the production rate by 9% and significantly improve the stability of the plant operation. The dynamic real-time optimization (DRTO) application also received strong operator acceptance. This project is an excellent example of how close cooperation between the plant personnel and DRTO technology provider produced outstanding results. It demonstrates that high-level knowledge of the process and process chemistry is a mandatory for the proj
