Materia extends global catalysts distribution pact with Sigma-Aldrich

Materia has extended its exclusive catalyst distribution agreement with Sigma-Aldrich Corp. by 10 years, the company announced on Thursday.

Under the deal, Aldrich Chemical has worldwide rights to distribute Materia’s Grubbs catalyst technology to the research and development community.

“Sigma-Aldrich is the clear global leader in research chemical distribution," said John Kibler, vice president of business development at Materia.

“Their strong channels provide innovators in the chemical, polymer, and pharmaceutical industries with straight-forward catalyst access, which in turn enables a robust pipeline of win-win opportunities.”

Materia’s olefin metathesis catalyst technology enables chemical compounds to be synthesized with greater efficiency, under less stringent reaction conditions, and with reduced byproducts and hazardous waste, according to the company.

Aldrich Chemical currently sells 15 Materia metathesis catalysts, which are based upon core patents exclusively licensed from the California Institute of Technology, as well as complementary technology from Materia, Boston College, the University of Calgary, and the University of New Orleans.

The companies will launch a new metathesis catalyst providing cis-selectivity later this year, Materia officials said.

Financial details were not disclosed.
