ExxonMobil Chemical wins top AFPM safety award at Baytown complex
The ExxonMobil chemical plant in Baytown, Texas, was awarded the Distinguished Safety Award from the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) trade group, the company announced on Thursday.
The annual award recognizes superior safety performance in the US refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries.
"Operational excellence is the foundation of ExxonMobil's success," said Joe Blommaert, plant manager at ExxonMobil Chemical. "The achievement by our employees demonstrates their commitment to excellence in pursuing our vision that nobody gets hurt."
Some 1,350 employees and contractors at the ExxonMobil plant received AFPM's highest honor for safety performance during more than 5 million work hours in 2011 and 2012 with no recorded injuries.
"Baytown has an exceptional safety culture that is built on a foundation of extensive employee involvement and commitment," Blommaert added. "Our employees and contractors help drive our safety efforts through their active involvement in our personnel and process safety activities. Our safety culture has helped us consistently deliver industry-leading safety performance."
ExxonMobil Chemical, one of the largest chemical companies in the world, said it achieved best ever global workforce safety performance in 2012.
"Our industry has no greater priority than ensuring the safety and security of their employees, facilities and the communities surrounding their operations," said AFPM president Charles T. Drevna.
The ExxonMobil Baytown site, which includes an adjacent refinery and olefins plant, is the largest petroleum and petrochemical complex in the US.
