Lukoil completes first wave of Iraqi worker training

By HASSAN HAFIDH

Russia's second-largest oil producer OAO Lukoil has completed the training of some 170 Iraqis on various qualifications, including well production, oil and gas treatment, instrumental and control and mechanical engineering, the company said Monday.

Some 160 other Iraqis will graduate from the company's training center in Iraq in May 2014, while 180 new students will be enrolled in the center in 2014, it said in a statement.

Lukoil will employ graduates immediately in different facilities of Iraq's supergiant West Qurna-2 oil projects in southern Iraq, operated by the company, the statement added.

The center was opened in December 2012 and SPIE Oil & Gas Services is providing the training, it said.

Lukoil is developing the 13-billion-barrel West Qurna-2 oil project, which it expects to start production at 150,000 bpd either at the end of this year or early next year. The field was awarded to Lukoil in an auction in 2009.

The Russian firm, along with its Japanese partner Inpex, also won last year an exploration block in southern Iraq.
