Sempra opens new underground gas storage facility in US

Sempra US Gas & Power LLC, a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, has received permission from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to commence operations at a second underground natural gas storage facility at its Mississippi Hub Storage facility in Simpson County, Mississippi.

The capacity addition of 7.5 billion cubic feet (Bcf) increases the storage cavern's total storage capacity to 15 Bcf.

All of the facility's available injection capacity of 450 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd) has been contracted, although additional injection capacity will open up after dewatering at the new cavern is complete.

The storage facility is connected to three major interstate gas pipelines: SONAT, Transco and Southeast Supply Header (SESH). All of the pipelines deliver to major markets throughout the US Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

In 2013, Sempra US plans to finish construction on a third 7.5-Bcf cavern, thereby enlarging the total capacity of Mississippi Hub Storage to 22.5 Bcf.
