Energy Transfer has withdrawn its air permit application for a proposed $1.8-billion petrochemical complex in Jefferson County, Texas (U.S.), abruptly pausing plans for the major Gulf Coast project. The withdrawal was submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on May 6 without explanation, despite the agency previously determining the application met legal requirements and scheduling it for commissioner review in June.
The proposed facility, planned for Nederland, would have been a large ethane cracking plant designed to convert natural gas components into ethylene and propylene, key ingredients used in plastics manufacturing.
Environmental and public health concerns surrounded the project because roughly 40,000 residents live near the proposed site. Energy Transfer has not commented on why the permit application was withdrawn or whether the project could move forward in another form later.
