First batch of equipment arrives in Kazakhstan for $7.7-B Atyrau polyethylene project

The first batch of large-scale equipment for a polyethylene plant under construction has arrived in Kazakhstan, the press service of National Company KazMunayGas (KMG) said.

"Two mixed-vessel ships delivered the first batch of large-scale equipment for the polyethylene plant under construction in the Atyrau region to the port of Yersay in the Mangistau region. The shipment consists of nine pieces of equipment for the pyrolysis unit previously shipped from the manufacturer. The total weight of the batch is about 12,000 tons, comparable to the weight of approximately 200 loaded railcars," the KMG press service said.

The delivery included reactors, separators and columns. The largest item is a wet flare knockout drum weighing 347 tons and measuring more than 43 meters in length.

"Unloading has been completed. The next stage will be transporting the equipment to the construction site of the National Industrial Petrochemical Technopark special economic zone in the Atyrau region," KMG said.

The company added that the delivery of the first batch confirms adherence to the project's construction schedule, with commissioning planned for 2029.

The project operator, Silleno, earlier said the logistics operation for the equipment delivery began on March 13 with loading onto a sea vessel at the port of Shanghai.

Silleno is the operator of the polyethylene project in the Atyrau region, which involves the construction of a plant with an annual capacity of 1.25 million tons of polyethylene. Production is expected to account for about 1% of global polyethylene output. Project implementation began in 2022, with completion scheduled for 2029.

The project participants are KazMunayGas (29.9%), SIBUR (30%), Sinopec (30%), and KMG PetroChem (10.1%).

The estimated cost of the project is $7.7 billion, which will include the stakeholders' own funds and loans from international banks.
