Evonik Industries is building a production plant for precipitated silica in the US state of South Carolina to supply the tire industry. The industry needs high-quality precipitated silica for producing fuel-efficient tires with good wet grip properties, which can save up to 8% fuel in comparison to conventional car tires.

Sinclair Casper Refining pays $655K in cleanup costs to EPA
DENVER -- Sinclair Casper Refining Company has paid $655,000 to reimburse the US Environmental Protection Agency for response costs incurred at the Empire State Oil Company Refinery Site in Thermopolis, Wyoming. The company entered into a settlement agreement with EPA for the recovery of past costs associated with the cleanup of the site, including the removal of asbestos, in September. EPA received payment last week.
EIA: Biomass-based diesel growth due to final 2017 RFS targets
On Nov. 23, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued its final rule for the 2017 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program year, with higher targets than those initially proposed in May. EPA increased both the advanced biofuels and total renewable fuel targets while keeping the cellulosic biofuel and biomass-based diesel targets unchanged.
